Why don't my mods work?
Quick answer: mods are made for specific versions of games. When a game gets updated, some or all of its mods stop working until we update them. Fix: match your game version to the mods, downgrade the game if possible, or request a mod update on the forum.
When mods show question marks, refuse your input, or simply do nothing, this is almost always why: every mod targets a specific game version, and game updates break that link. Work through the checklist below — it resolves nearly every report we see on the community forum.
The troubleshooting checklist
- Match the game version. If values show as question marks or won't accept changes, your game version differs from the one the mods were made for. Mod Engine lists mods per game version — make sure you loaded the entry matching your installed build.
- Select the game process first. Mods can't do anything until Mod Engine is attached to the running game. Attach, then toggle.
- Enable the parent mod. Many packs gate their options behind a top-level enable entry. Turn it on before the individual mods below it.
- Run Mod Engine as administrator. Some games need elevated access for memory modification to take effect.
- Confirm it's a single-player game. Mod Engine is built for offline, single-player games only. Online and multiplayer titles are not supported — see Is Mod Engine safe?
The game updated and broke the mods. What are my options?
Two, and both are legitimate:
- Get the game version the mods were made for. Sometimes downgrading is possible (GOG offline installers, Steam depot rollbacks for some titles, keeping auto-update off); other times it isn't. If you can match versions, everything works again immediately.
- Request a mod update. Post the game and version on the forum. We're a small team supporting thousands of games, so please be patient — we can't give an ETA on individual update requests, but we work through them continually. Pro members are given priority, and their update requests are fulfilled as soon as possible.
